The Parable of the Wicked Tenants


12 And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a pit for the wine press, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country. 2 When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3 And they took him and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Again he sent to them another servant, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully. 5 And he sent another, and him they killed; and so with many others, some they beat and some they killed. 6 He had still one other, a beloved son; finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 7 But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 And they took him and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. 9 What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants, and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not read this scripture:

‘The very stone which the builders rejected
has become the head of the corner;
11 this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
12 And they tried to arrest him, but feared the multitude, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them; so they left him and went away.

12 И начал говорить им притчами: некоторый человек насадил виноградник и обнес оградою, и выкопал точило, и построил башню, и, отдав его виноградарям, отлучился.
2 И послал в свое время к виноградарям слугу--принять от виноградарей плодов из виноградника.
3 Они же, схватив его, били, и отослали ни с чем.
4 Опять послал к ним другого слугу; и тому камнями разбили голову и отпустили его с бесчестьем.
5 И опять иного послал: и того убили; и многих других то били, то убивали.
6 Имея же еще одного сына, любезного ему, напоследок послал и его к ним, говоря: постыдятся сына моего.
7 Но виноградари сказали друг другу: это наследник; пойдем, убьем его, и наследство будет наше.
8 И, схватив его, убили и выбросили вон из виноградника.
9 Что же сделает хозяин виноградника? --Придет и предаст смерти виноградарей, и отдаст виноградник другим.
10 Неужели вы не читали сего в Писании: камень, который отвергли строители, тот самый сделался главою угла;

5 Тоді вислав він іншого, і того вони вбили. І багатьох іще інших, набили одних, а одних повбивали.
6 І він мав ще одного, сина улюбленого. Наостанок послав і того він до них і сказав: Посоромляться сина мого!
7 А ті винарі міркували собі: Це спадкоємець; ходім, замордуймо його, і нашою спадщина буде!
8 І вони схопили його та й убили, і викинули його за виноградник...
9 Отож, що пан виноградника зробить? Він прибуде та й вигубить тих винарів, і віддасть виноградника іншим.
10 Чи ви не читали в Писанні: Камінь, що його будівничі відкинули, той наріжним став каменем!

VENERABLE HIEROMONK ALEXI (SHUSHANIA) (†1923) (31 January JC)

Venerable Hieromonk Alexi (Shushania) of Teklati
      Saint Alexi (Shushania) was born September 23, 1852, in the village of Noqalaqevi, in the Senaki district of Samegrelo, to a pious Christian couple. His father died in 1868, after giving the sixteen-year-old future hieromonk his blessing to care for the family.Commemorated on January 18
      In the same year that his father died, Alexi journeyed to Jerusalem on a pilgrimage, and from there to Constantinople to visit his uncle, Islam Shushania, a successful merchant and a clever and pious man. During this visit, Alexi became fascinated with the trade industry and resolved to become a merchant as well. But he would soon discover that God’s will was different from his own.
      One day Alexi borrowed a small icon of St. John the Baptist from his uncle, confined himself to his room, and there began to experience great inner warfare. He was moved by a profound love for his mother, sisters, brothers, and friends, but at the same time he sensed an invisible force calling him to the spiritual life.
      After several agonizing hours, Alexi finally asked himself, “How can I fulfill my father’s will? He entrusted me with the responsibility to look after the family—how can I reconcile this with God’s calling?”
      To his great wonder, an invisible instructor answered him, saying, “If you die now, who will take over your responsibilities?” The answer was clear. “God will!” Alexi proclaimed. And he heard the voice again.
      “So die to the world, entrust everything to God, and He will minister to your family.”
      The encounter transformed Alexi’s life. Afterwards he confined himself to his room for months, reading the Holy Scriptures, and keeping a strict fast. Witnessing the radical change in Alexi’s way of life, his uncle thought it would be best for them to leave Constantinople and return to Georgia.
      It was not long before Alexi’s loved ones realized he had made a covenant with God, and that he would enter the monastic life. His brothers and sisters were distressed upon hearing the news, but his mother gave thanks to God and blessed her son.
      At the age of twenty Alexi moved to Teklati Women’s Monastery. He began to lead a strict ascetic life and went from village to village, caring for those ill with tuberculosis, cholera, and other serious illnesses, and burying the corpses of the homeless.
      Several years passed, and many became convinced that Alexi was a fool-for-Christ. He preached the Word of God with intensity, and his life was an example for many. His preaching inspired his mother, Elene, his younger sister Salome, and his brother Besarion to join him in the monastic life. After he was tonsured a monk, Besarion made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and remained there for several years.
      Because of his exemplary service to the Lord, he was ordained a priest at Martvili Monastery. Later he was tonsured into the great schema. Alexi also spent time on Mt. Athos. After returning from the Holy Mountain, he made a pilgrimage to the Kiev Caves Monastery, then returned to Georgia to continue his labors.
      Around the year 1885 St. Alexi moved to Gelati Monastery, where he continued to study and produced several original works. In 1886 he was reassigned to Khobi Monastery and ordained a deacon by Bishop Grigol, and in 1888 he was ordained a hieromonk. Two years later, in 1890, he became ill and returned to be with his mother and sisters at Teklati Monastery.
      According to God’s will his health was restored, and in 1891 Alexi fashioned a cell for himself in the mountainous village of Menji (also called “Archangels’ Hill”), near the place where he was born. He gathered his disciples and undertook a stricter ascetic life. Fr. Alexi’s health was so improved that he was able to celebrate the divine services again.
      The holy father would receive alms, but he distributed most of what was given to him. He divided the alms in three parts: the first he put aside for his personal needs, the second, for the church and its guests, and the third, for the poor and infirm.
      St. Alexi kept a life-size cross in his cell, and when he prayed he supported the cross on his back, since it reminded him of the position in which St. Simon of Cyrene carried the Holy Cross to Christ’s Crucifixion on Golgotha.
      In spite of his strict ascetic life, Hieromonk Alexi was remarkably close to the people in his community and was loved by many for the spiritual warmth that he radiated.
      After many years the strict ascetic life finally took its toll on Fr. Alexi’s health. He dismissed his pupils and spent the last years of his earthly life (from around the year 1915) with his cousins, the schemanuns Akepsima and Pasto. St. Alexi reposed January 18, 1923, frail from a long and labor-filled life in the service of the Lord.
      For forty days after his death, the schemanuns Akepsima and Pasto remained in his cell for fear that the Communist government’s henchmen would destroy his humble dwelling. Later they buried Fr. Alexi’s body at Teklati, and themselves began to labor at the Archangels’ Monastery. With the blessing of Metropolitan Eprem of Batumi-hemokmedi and Chqondidi, Schemanun Akepsima and Abbess Pasto translated Fr. Alexi’s incorrupt relics from Teklati to the Archangels’ Monastery and buried them near the east wall of the temple on January 8, 1960.

27 І знову прийшли вони в Єрусалим. Коли ж Він у храмі ходив, поприходили первосвященики й книжники, і старшини до Нього,
28 і сказали Йому: Якою Ти владою все оце чиниш? І хто Тобі владу цю дав, щоб Ти це робив?

30 Іванове хрищення з неба було, чи від людей? Відповідайте Мені!

And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, 28 and they said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?” 29 Jesus said to them, “I will ask you a question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men? Answer me.” 31 And they argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 32 But shall we say, ‘From men’?”—they were afraid of the people, for all held that John was a real prophet. 33 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

      The Holy Emperor Theodosius the Great during the period of his reign (379‑395) delivered a decisive blow to paganism: he issued a legal edict, under which any sort of service to the pagan gods was considered a transgression. The zealous proponent of Orthodoxy issued many laws in defence of the Church and against heretics. The Second OEcumenical Council (381) was convened by him.

The Holy Martyrs Speusippos, Eleusippos, Meleusippos, and their grandmother Leonilla together with Neonos, Turbonos and Jovilla


Commemorated on January 16

The Holy Martyrs Speusippos, Eleusippos, Meleusippos, and their grandmother Leonilla together with Neonos, Turbonos and Jovilla suffered in Galilee (by another account, in Cappadocia) in the Second Century, during the time of the persecution under Marcus Aurelius (161-180). Leonilla received Baptism in her declining years from one of the disciples of Saint Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, and she afterwards converted to Christ her three grandchildren. The brothers, out of their enthusiasm for the Lord, pulled down idols and reproached the pagans for their folly. The torturers, leading Leonilla to the place of execution, ordered her to say to her grandchildren that they should renounce Christ, but she in passing by them praised them for their bravery and their firm confession of faith. Then the martyrs were thrown into a fire, but it did not harm them. After the torturing and death of her grandchildren, Saint Leonilla was beheaded by the sword. Together with her suffered also Saint Jovilla. She beheld the unflinching faith of the holy martyrs and confessed herself a Christian, leaving behind an husband and young son. The torturers, having hung her up by the hair, lacerated her body and beheaded her. Saint Neonos beheld the exploits of the holy brothers, and having recorded their sufferings, gave his manuscript to Turbonos, and he openly confessed himself a Christian, for which he was fiercely beaten and died from his beating. Saint Turbonos, having copied out the exploits of the passion-bearers, also ended his life by martyrdom. These martyrs are particularly revered in Spain, where many churches are dedicated to them. The relics of the holy martyrs were given by the Greek emperor Zenon to France, in the city of Langre.

Святые мученики Спевсипп, Елевсипп, Мелевсипп и бабка их Леонилла и с ними Неон, Турвон и Иовилла пострадали в Галлии (по другому сказанию, в Каппадокии) во втором веке, во время гонения Марка Аврелия (161-180).
Леонилла приняла Крещение в преклонных годах от одного из учеников святого Поликарпа, епископа Смирнского, и обратила затем ко Христу трех своих внуков. Братья, воспламенившись ревностью о Господе, разбили идолов и укоряли язычников в их безумии. Мучители, призвав Леониллу на место казни, повелели ей уговорить внуков, чтобы они отреклись от Христа, но она, подойдя к ним, хвалила их за мужество и твердое исповедание своей веры. Тогда мучеников бросили в огонь, но он не повредил им. После мучений и смерти внуков святая Леонилла была усечена мечом.




Вместе с ней пострадала святая Иовилла, она видела непоколебимую веру святых мучеников и исповедала себя христианкой, оставив мужа и малолетнего сына. Мучители, повесив ее за волосы, изранили ее тело и обезглавили.
Святой Неон видел подвиг святых братьев и, записав их страдания, передал свою рукопись Турвону, сам же открыто исповедал Христа, за что был жестоко избит и скончался от побоев.
Святой Турвон, подражая подвигам страстотерпцев, также окончил жизнь мучеником. Мученики эти особенно чтимы в Испании, где им посвящены многие храмы. Мощи святых мучеников греческий император Зенон передал во Францию, в город Лангр.

Commemorated on January 15

The Monk Gabriel, founder of the Lesnovsk monastery near the city of Kratov, having received after the death of his parents a large inheritance, rejected marriage and went out onto the Lesnovsk mountain and became a monk. And there he built a church in the name of the Archangel Michael, and having gathered many monks and established for it an hegumen, he left to the monastery all his inheritance. He then hid himself away in a mine cave, where he asceticised for a period of thirty years, conquering demonic temptations by prayer and fasting. He then returned to the Lesnovsk monastery and there peacefully reposed (XI). After thirty years his relics were uncovered, and healings worked through them. A long while later they were transferred to Ternovo (Tirnova) in Bulgaria.

Там он построил храм во имя Архистратига Михаила, собрал много иноков, поставил игумена, сам же, оставив обители все свое имущество, скрылся в горной пещере, где подвизался на протяжении тридцати лет, побеждая бесовские наваждения постом и молитвой. Затем вернулся в Лесновскую обитель и там мирно почил (ХI). Через тридцать лет были обретены его мощи, при которых совершались исцеления. Спустя долгое время они были перенесны в Тернов (Тырнов) Болгарский.

  Confession is good for the soul!



First let us discuss confession. In order to properly grasp its meaning, let us turn to examining our inner spiritual life. We know that within us there is a constant struggle between good and evil. And the true Christian life begins in us only when we consciously take the side of good and attempt to defeat evil.

As long as we idly dismiss our internal life without discerning good and evil within it, and passively give ourselves over to our desires and amusements, whatever they might be, making no accounting of ourselves, we will not live a Christian life. Only when we painfully sense our failings, when we condemn ourselves and thirst for renewal, only then do we embark on the path of Christian life. Let us look at concrete examples. Consider the Pharisee and the Tax-Collector. The Pharisee attends the Temple of God, performs many good deeds, but we still would not say that he lives a life of truth. Why not? Because he is completely satisfied with himself. He does not have the keen sense of pain over his impurity, he praises himself for his righteousness, he has not noticed the abyss of sin which lies within him. The Tax-Collector, on the contrary, has performed no good deeds. But he clearly sees the depth of his sinfulness and grieves. He asks one thing of God, mercy, that is salvation. This is the genuine Christian attitude.

Another example is from the sixth century, in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, where a young sinner named Maria lived. Her sin was sweet and pleasurable. She was carefree and exuberant. She never even perceived the call of her conscience. She had no understanding of herself. Simply for the novelty of it, she joined a group of worshipers heading for Jerusalem to celebrate the Elevation of the Cross of the Lord. The whole way she sang sinful songs, poisoning the peace of the pilgrims in their lofty spiritual moods with her shameless acts and mockery. Finally, she arrived in Jerusalem and without thinking, just out of curiosity, followed her fellow travelers to the Church of the Resurrection of Christ. But what happened then? When she tried to step over the threshold of the church, some unseen power stopped her. She was horrified, and ashamed before the others. She did not wish to show that she could not enter the church, but all of her efforts were in vain. Then a bright light shone before her and she saw her entire past life. She saw things she had never noticed before. She saw that she was unworthy of entering the church, for she was too impure. And then she wept bitterly. From this moment, her internal struggle began, to which she dedicated the rest of her life.

So we see that sometimes man pays no attention to his faults and sins and lives for many years without care, and then, the time comes for his eyes to open. Some experience it in an instant, as did St Mary of Egypt, others experience it with great effort over a long period of time.

Let us apply all this to ourselves. Trace your own actions, your intentions, your words. Yesterday you might have hurt someone with a harsh word, with insulting suspicion or a poisonous barb; a day earlier some mean, lowly desire may have gnawed on your soul and yet you did not abandon dwelling on it but even tried to enjoy it; or you had the chance to sacrifice your peace or comfort to help someone, but you declined to do so, etc. If you are vigilant and honest with yourself, you would see that your life is a web, a huge network of such small but significant wicked moments, which comprise a significant part of your existence. If we ignore this, thinking that this is all normal, this means that you have not yet begun to live the Christian life. Our Christian life only begins when we say: No, I do not wish for such disgusting things to live in my soul! I wish to be pure and good! I wish to be a true Christian! But as soon as you attempt to take this path, you will be convinced of the following: the struggle against evil within yourself is exceedingly difficult, painful and exhausting. You will see how wicked your emotions are, how your filthy thoughts and desires, unwillingly, without your consent, take hold of you, push you towards one ugly deed or another. You may utter a harsh word or make a foolish move, and then you will begin to understand that you should not have said that, or done that, whereas before you never thought twice that whatever you said or did was wrong. You will begin to feel the great truth of the words of Apostle Paul: “For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I” (Romans 7:15).

Moreover, you become the plaything of your evil tendencies, you feel that your inner being is being tarnished, blackened by these wicked desires, your thoughts are confused, your passions are dirty, your will is weakened. How, one asks, does a person rid himself of all this filth? How is one to expel it? Will all of this remain forever? Sometimes when you share your spiritual sorrows with another, you feel unburdened. But when you do this, you only share your sorrows, you do not relieve yourself of them. Something else is needed, a truer means of salvation.

The renowned spiritual author St Theophan the Recluse, in one of his essays, tells us the following: there was a young man who was in deep sorrow that his many sins have stained his soul. Grieving, he fell asleep. He dreamt that an angel descended to him from Heaven, and with a sharp knife slit open his chest, pulled out his heart, cut it into pieces, removed all the rot and filth within it, carefully replaced it and healed the wound in his chest. The young man awoke and felt himself cleansed of his sin. Would it not be so good for us to experience just such a wondrous healing as this bright angel brought? But this angel is in fact given to us! It is the grace of the Holy Spirit in the Mystery of confession.

We know that Jesus Christ brought holy life to this earth. This holy life is imparted to humanity through the Church and the Holy Mysteries. Confession is the Mystery of holy repentance. It was established so that through it we could purify ourselves of all the filth of sin. As He established this mystery, Jesus Christ said to His disciples: “Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained ” (John 20:22-23). And to this day the pastors of the Christian Church, with the power given to them by the Lord, release the sins of those who repent, and the grace of the Holy Spirit purifies their hearts.
In this way, confession is not some vague, strange custom that we have to blindly participate in for some reason, but an extremely important and exceptionally crucial means of moral recuperation and correction, which answers the demands of our own moral nature. To refuse to confess is the same as if we suffer from some physical ailment and, knowing what the most effective medicine is, neglecting to take it out of ignorance or laziness, and so to allow the disease to worsen. Our sins are spiritual disease. The medicine for this disease is confession. To neglect to use this medicine means that we do not wish to lose our sinful impurity and accumulate more and more of it.
